Joseph Hutchins

“My utilitarian objects engage me with their strong relationship between aesthetics and functionality. I have a strong passion for new design technologies and ceramic forming processes; progression, with acknowledgement for tradition, is a fundamental philosophy to which I am drawn. Resources like Computer Automated Design, CNC milling, and 3D printing allow me to create forms that could not be rendered by the human hand.
The departure of the digital is significant in the production of my work. The forms I create operate as a response to deceive the prescribed forms which my molds contain. I utilize colored slips in precarious ways as they allow surface to operate as form. This act intrigues me as it departs from the limitations my digital processes hold, and allows me to consider a physical and more opportunistic interaction with clay.” -Joseph Hutchins
