Stephen Nguyen

At first glance I thought Stephen Nguyen’s work, specifically this collection of work, were all photographs. I thought maybe some filters were used, though to my surprise these are all oil paintings. The rich and buttery reds speak to the use of oils and create this blurred moment as if you are looking through a dirty window trying to make out the shapes in the distance. All the tiny lights represent something in our man made world, though when squinting they dissolve into patterns of colors and distort our perception of what it really is that we are looking at. Nguyen successfully creates that moment when our eyes deceive us and something new emerges from what is actually there.
